What’s in My Diaper Bag (Low-Tox Mom Edition)

Packing a diaper bag used to feel like prepping for a week-long trip - especially with my first baby. But over time I’ve found what actually gets used and what can stay home. I also try to keep things as non-toxic and simple as possible - no clutter, no synthetic fragrances, and nothing that’ll leak mystery goo all over my bag. Here’s what I keep in my diaper bag these days:

First, the Bag: My Go-To Diaper Backpack

I use the Belong Utility Backpack and genuinely love it. It’s roomy without being bulky, has tons of compartments (so I’m not constantly digging), and looks super sleek. Plus - it comes with a changing pad, so one less thing to pack.

Diapering Essentials

Non-toxic diapers – I usually pack around 5 depending on how long we’ll be out. We’re currently using Pura diapers.

Wipes – We use Joonya currently and store them with the diapers in an Itzy Ritzy packing cube!

Portable changing pad – Mine came with the diaper bag, It’s foldable and easy to wipe clean.

Wet/dry bag – For dirty or wet clothes - I have these. They’re large enough to fit multiple things, they don’t leak, and can go right in the wash when we get home.

Diaper cream - Good to have on hand in case of random diaper rashes! I love this one or this one.

Extras for Kids

Changes of clothes – I usually go with a footed sleeper (less pieces to lose), and maybe one other outfit for the baby (depending on how long we’ll be out). And usually one other change of clothes for each other toddler. I usually try to throw in dresses for them (weather dependent) because it’s easiest to pack!

Burp cloth – I like these muslin ones because they’re light and absorbent.

Pacifier – If your baby takes one, keeping a spare in the diaper bag is clutch.

Feeding Supplies

Snacks for toddlers – I keep a couple healthier shelf stable snacks in a zip-up bag in the diaper bag at all times. Why do toddlers always want a snack when you’re out and about?

Water bottles – For me and for the kids. Hydration is a must, especially when you’re breastfeeding.

Other Essentials

Hand sanitizer – We love this one from Dr. Bronners.

Mini First Aid kit - You never know when someone will need a bandaid! We love this travel first aid kit!

Swaddle blanket - perfect for so many situations! I love these oganic ones.

Sunscreen stick - small and compact but easy to apply! We love this one. Check out my full sunscreen blog here.

Dog poop bags - perfect for dirty diapers when you’re on the go!

Magic balm - great for chapped lips, scrapes, dry skin, diaper rash…literally anything.

And: Phone, wallet, chapstick, sunglasses, keys

Some Tips

  • Packing cubes are clutch – I use small zip pouches or packing cubes to separate categories: diapering, snacks, clothes, and mama stuff. It makes it so easy to grab exactly what I need without digging.

  • Restock right after you get home – This way if you have to run out quickly next time you don’t have to worry about packing the diaper bag!

  • Rotate seasonal items – In the summer, I keep a mini mineral sunscreen and sunhat; in the winter, a beanie/knit hat and gloves for cold little hands.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're packing for a quick errand or a full-day outing, having a well-stocked, organized diaper bag makes everything smoother. I don’t aim for perfection - just prepared enough to feel calm, not chaotic. And trust me, you’re doing amazing no matter how many times you forget the extra pants.

If you’re in the market for a good bag, I can’t recommend the Belong Utility Backpack enough - you can grab it with my discount code “HANNAHV15”!
