Low-Tox Summer Essentials for Babies & Toddlers (Beach, Pool & On-the-Go)
Low-Tox Summer Essentials for Babies & Toddlers: My Favorite Beach & Pool Gear
Looking for low-tox summer essentials for babies and toddlers? Here's everything we actually use for beach days, pool trips, travel, sun protection, snacks, hydration, and more.
Low Tox • Baby & Toddler • Family Life
Summer with little kids is one of my favorite seasons...and one of the messiest.
Our days are filled with beach trips, splash pads, pool afternoons, picnics, stroller walks, and enough snacks to feed a small army. After becoming a mom of three, I've slowly found the products that make summer easier while also helping me reduce some of the unnecessary exposures that matter most to our family.
This isn't about creating a perfectly "toxin-free" summer. We still swim in chlorinated pools, stop for ice cream, and occasionally survive on gas station snacks during road trips. For me, low-tox is about making thoughtful swaps where they have the biggest impact, then getting outside and actually enjoying the season.
These are the products that have truly earned a permanent spot in our summer routine.

Sun Protection Essentials for Babies & Toddlers
When it comes to babies and young kids, I always think of sun protection in layers.
Covering up first usually means needing much less sunscreen later.
Mineral sunscreen
Our family uses mineral sunscreen made with zinc oxide because it's the option we personally feel most comfortable using. I also prefer lotions over sprays since they provide more even coverage and are easier to apply thoroughly on little ones.
If you're looking for my favorite brands and the ingredients I personally avoid, I have a full guide to clean mineral sunscreens here.
UPF rash guards and swimsuits
This might be my favorite summer parenting hack.
Long-sleeve UPF swimwear means less sunscreen to apply, fewer missed spots, and much less reapplying throughout the day.
We love:
Wide-brim sun hats
A good hat protects little faces, ears, and necks without you having to think about it.
Our favorites:
Pop-up beach shade
If you're heading to the beach with a baby, this is one of the first things I'd pack.
Keeping babies in the shade is one of the best forms of sun protection, especially for infants under 6 months who shouldn't rely on sunscreen alone.
Our favorite for the whole family
This one is great for babies!
Mineral SPF lip balm
One thing I always forget until someone gets chapped lips. This one is our favorite.
Beach & Pool Essentials
These are the things that actually make beach and pool days run more smoothly.
Reusable swim diapers
We almost always use reusable swim diapers.
They're surprisingly easy to wash, create far less waste, and end up being much more economical over the course of a summer.
For vacations or longer travel days, disposable swim diapers are still convenient. These are my favorite lower-tox option.
Organic cotton or muslin blanket
A lightweight muslin blanket is one of those surprisingly versatile items.
We use ours as a clean place for baby to play or lay down, a lightweight towel when needed, and an extra layer if someone gets chilly after swimming.
One thing I don't recommend is draping blankets over strollers, since doing so can trap heat inside.
This one is one of our favorites!
Space saving sand toys
I learned this one after hauling giant buckets around for years.
Collapsible or stackable toys take up almost no room and don't completely take over the trunk all summer.
Favorites:
Wearable hooded towels
Easy for kids to throw on and wear home after a pool or beach day! Our favorites
After-sun spray
Even when you're careful, someone inevitably ends up with a little too much sun.
We like this after-sun spray for cooling skin after long beach days.
Pool bag
Every family eventually finds "the" pool bag.
This is ours. It fits everything, cleans up easily, has held up amazingly over the years, and comes on every beach and pool trip.
After-swim shampoo and conditioner
Between chlorine, salt water, and sunscreen, little hair goes through a lot during the summer.
This is the set we've been loving lately: shampoo and conditioner
Sunscreen applicator + powdered sunscreen
Reapplying sunscreen on a sandy toddler isn't exactly anyone's favorite activity.
A sunscreen applicator makes lotion much easier to spread, and powdered mineral sunscreen is incredibly convenient for quick touch-ups on faces or in hair parts before heading back outside.
Cornstarch for sand removal
This might be my favorite free parenting tip.
Sprinkle a little cornstarch onto sandy feet and legs, rub it around, and the sand brushes right off.
No fancy product needed.
Wet bags
We never leave home without at least two.
They're perfect for wet swimsuits, sandy clothes, messy outfits, and even snacks that leak. These are our favorites.
Summer Snacks & Feeding On the Go
If you've ever experienced a hungry toddler at the beach, you know exactly how quickly a fun outing can unravel.
One of my favorite finds this year has been a stainless steel snackle box.
Most snackle boxes are made entirely of plastic, which means food sits directly against plastic for hours, often in the heat. I wanted something that kept food separated without that contact, so I switched to one with stainless steel compartments.
It comes with an insulated carrying bag and an ice pack, so fruit, cheese, yogurt, and other snacks stay cold all morning.
Even beyond the low-tox aspect, it simply makes outings easier. Everything is organized, easy to grab, and I don't spend half the morning digging through snack bags.
It's easily one of my favorite purchases this summer. Grab it here!
A few other feeding favorites:
Insulated stainless steel water bottles (we swap out the plastic straws for these stainless ones)
Breast milk cooler if you're nursing or pumping (see my full breast milk cooler comparison here)
Staying Cool & Hydrated
Little kids heat up much faster than adults, so hydration becomes even more important during the summer months.
We always bring more water than we think we'll need, offer drinks frequently, and take plenty of breaks in the shade.
A portable fan is another summer staple for us during walks, outdoor events, and sports games.
We love this one!
If you're breastfeeding, don't be surprised if your baby wants to nurse a little more often on especially hot days. I also keep a large insulated water bottle with me because staying hydrated helps me feel my best during long summer outings.
That's honestly about it.
After a few summers with little kids, I've realized I don't need every trendy beach gadget. A handful of products that work really well makes our days much easier, and everyone spends more time playing instead of searching through an overstuffed beach bag.
Shop Our Summer Favorites
I've linked everything mentioned in this post, but if you'd rather browse everything in one place, you can find all of our favorite summer products on my Amazon storefront (except our favorite bag - but you can find that here).
Final Thoughts
If there's one thing motherhood has taught me, it's that sometimes simple wins.
You don't need every fancy gadget and every "clean" version of everything to have an amazing summer with your kids.
Cover their skin. Pack enough snacks. Bring extra water. Find some shade. Let them get sandy, splash in puddles, eat popsicles that melt all over their swimsuits, and make the memories you'll laugh about later.
The products in this guide simply make those days a little easier, a little less stressful, and a little more enjoyable.
Here's to a summer full of sunshine, sticky fingers, sandy towels, and childhood memories.
